Brief about service on Mercedes Benz
If you feel it's time to have your Mercedes sent for a service, it's easy to think that you have to go to a branded workshop to get this done in a good and proper way. Fortunately, this is not always the case, all the while service at branded workshops will often be more expensive than if you choose an independent workshop.
The difference is that those who work at Mercedes-Benz workshops are specialists, and have received detailed training in all Mercedes-Benz models. This means that the precision increases, and that the workshops work more efficiently with the car. Although Mercedes are generally known for being of good quality, quality is also something that needs to be taken care of, and it may be good to keep that in mind when choosing a service center for your car.
A-Service and B-Service
Precisely for these reasons, Mercedes Benz encourages regular inspections and repairs of the car, which they offer through a flexible service system. In this system, the maintenance needs of your car are divided into two categories, namely A Service and B Service. A built-in system in the car will alert you when it's time for one of these, and at the same time this information will be sent to your Mercedes Benz workshop, so they know what needs to be done when you arrive. As a rule, these notifications come a month in advance. You can read more about what the various services contain further down in the article.

How much does a Mercedes service cost?
It is a well-known fact that servicing the car can cost several thousand kroner, and many car owners were previously upset that they could not take the warranty they had on the car with them when they switched to a new workshop. This was also the situation for Mercedes Benz cars for a long time; the warranty was lost if service or repairs were carried out at other workshops. But after the Norwegian Competition Authority changed the rules in 2013 and introduced free choice of workshop, it became possible to have both service and repairs carried out at the workshop of your choice.
Depending on the type of service you will have carried out and which car model you have, a small service starts at around NOK 2,800, while a large service can start at as much as NOK 6,500. There are big variations here, and it always pays to check with several workshops before you decide.
Mercedes' price promise
This may also be the reason why Mercedes Benz has started with a price promise to all its customers, where they promise to match the price of equivalent service and repairs from competing car workshops. If you take a written offer from a competing workshop with you, this means that Mercedes promises to give you exactly the same price for the same services at their own workshop. In many ways, this is a good deal for the consumer. At Mercedes, they can guarantee that they have both the right equipment and tools, in addition to the fact that they only operate with original parts should you need any replacements.
In addition, everyone employed at Mercedes is trained in all Mercedes Benz models, which means that they can be more precise and efficient in working with your car. Many will therefore argue that these advantages can give the car a longer life and an increased second-hand value.

Price factors when servicing Mercedes Benz
However, the price guarantee also comes with a number of conditions that must be met in order to get the same price as a competitor. Firstly, it is important to be aware that the price promise is not retroactive, and you cannot bring your own parts to the workshop if these are not original parts. There are also more details related to the competing offer. For example, you must be able to document down to the smallest detail what kind of repair is to be carried out and how many hours this will take. In addition, it must be able to be documented in writing. This is something Mercedes does to ensure against consumers coming up with false offers to get the service cheaper.
Below is a smart list to remember if you are going to try to obtain an offer from other workshops.
The price promise to Mercedes is therefore based on the following conditions:
- The parts must be original Mercedes parts or be according to the car manufacturer's specifications
- Applies to mechanical repairs, electronics and service
- Applies to cars and vans from Mercedes Benz that are older than five years, counted from the first registration date
- Competing offers must be presented in writing
- Competing offers must be from an approved garage
- Competing offers must be for identical repairs/services, including parts and labour, and must be able to be documented before ordering repairs/services (therefore not retroactively, if you have already made use of another offer)
- Competing offers must not be older than four weeks
- Competing offers must come from a workshop in Norway that is within a radius of 50 kilometers of the Mercedes Benz dealer in question

Om Mercedes Benz
Ever since the first car was produced in 1886, Mercedes Benz has been an exceptionally popular car brand. Their motto is “Das Beste Oder Nichts”, or “The best or nothing”, and they are well known for being one of the leading manufacturers of innovative premium cars. It is often claimed that Mercedes Benz is the world's most famous car brand, and there are countless fan clubs around the world. It may not be so strange; among the old cars still plying the roads around the world today, there are more of the Mercedes Benz type than of most other makes.
Mercedes is also often called the world's most valuable car brand because many of the new models they produce go on to become classics over time. It also means that they can often increase in value.
There are many authorized workshops and Mercedes workshops in Norway, and the easiest thing you can do to get an overview is to call your nearest workshop and ask. Just remember that many people will say that they can repair and service a Mercedes, without being authorized. If they are not an authorized workshop, this can have serious consequences for your warranty. EU inspection on Mercedes can also be carried out at any workshop approved for EU inspection, without voiding the warranty.

What is included in Mercedes' service?
As mentioned above, there is both an A Service and a B Service for Mercedes Benz cars, and in addition to this there are some extra services that are included for diesel cars.
Models produced in 2015, cars with a V12 engine and those produced by AMG, have different maintenance requirements than these again. It is important that you yourself monitor what service needs your car has. Furthermore, there is something called Full Service History, which is offered to cars that have only had their car repaired and serviced at approved Mercedes workshops.
If you go to the workshop to get an A Service on your car, it's good to be aware that this is a service that is based on both where you drive, how you drive, and other factors. A Mercedes manufactured after 2009 will usually need this type of service after the first year or 15,000 kilometers on the road, then every two years or at 30,000 kilometers - whichever comes first.
An A Service includes:
- Checking all fluid levels and topping up
- Changing the oil filter and engine oil
- Checking and adjusting the air pressure in the tyres
- Checking brake wear on brake discs and pads
- Resetting the service meter for the next A Service visit
A B Service from Mercedes Benz does not differ that much from an A service in terms of needs, and this also varies according to the car's specifications. Most models manufactured after 2009 need this service after the first year, or after 30,000 kilometers, then every two years or when driven 20,000 kilometers after the first B Service.
A B Service includes:
- Checking and adjusting the air pressure in the tyres
- Checking all fluid levels and topping up
- Changing the oil filter, engine oil, air filter and dust/pollen filter
- Change of brake fluid
- Checking brake wear on brake discs and pads
- Resetting the service meter for the next B Service visit

Brand workshop vs. independent workshop
If you do not have the opportunity to obtain an offer that meets the requirements from Mercedes Benz, in order to get a cheaper price for the service, you can save a lot of money by going to another workshop, or even traveling abroad. It is not uncommon for branded garages to be twice as expensive as independent garages, and the same applies to Mercedes Benz. You can often save many thousands of Swedish kroner by choosing a brand-independent workshop to carry out the main service on the car. However, it must be said that this is not always true. Brand workshops have recently taken up competition with independent workshops when it comes to price. In addition, Mercedes has a price promise which means that if you bring a written offer from a competing workshop, you can get exactly the same price for the same services at their own workshop.
Independent workshops are also workshops that are not associated with a specific car brand, but which can nevertheless repair all car brands. It is also possible to check with other garages that specialize in Mercedes. There are no fixed prices for repairs and service, so you may also get a cheaper deal if you simply go to a different brand workshop than the one you usually use.
It is best to check with several workshops before making a decision. Make a round of calls and ask for price estimates from at least three workshops, one of which is a brand workshop, and compare them with each other. Always bring the service booklet that comes with the car, and remember that the price is affected by both which parts you choose, whether these are original or non-original, and which workshop(s) have carried out the repairs or service so far.
New rules for changing wheels and car maintenance
It is important to be aware that if you want to have a wheel change or car care carried out, such as the repair of stone chips or interior and exterior washing, and you do not use a Mercedes workshop or another approved car workshop, you must from 1 July 2022 check that the business is approved by the Norwegian Labor Inspection Authority. On 1 July, a change will come into force that requires businesses that provide such services to apply for approval, based on a number of requirements. If the business does not apply or does not get the application approved, the service is considered illegal. It is therefore also considered illegal to buy such a service, according toregulations on public approval of businesses that offer car care, wheel changing and wheel storage, and on the purchase of such services.
